Water stewardship addressing impacts of pharmaceuticals

AWS water stewardship was cited as a key factor in public-sector efforts to address the impacts of pharmaceuticals and priority chemicals in the local water system at a recent workshop in Inverness, Scotland.

The event was organized by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, an AWS member, and included participation from a wide range of experts, including from respected international NGO Healthcare Without Harm.

The ongoing implementation of the AWS Standard at Caithness general Hospital by AWS member NHS Highland attracted much interest. Caithness General is aiming to become the first healthcare facility in the world to achieve AWS certification.

The Caithness General implementation is part of the Green Healthcare Highlands Project, exploring innovative approaches to sustainability, and is intended as a domino project to generate learning for replication at other sites in the region and potentially further afield.

The project involves several key public sector agencies in Northern Scotland including Highlands and Islands Enterprise (an AWS member), the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environmental Research Institute of the University of the Highlands and Islands.
