Driving good water stewardship at a district level in Indonesia

Indonesia, like many regions around the world, faces growing threats from water-related risks such as droughts, pollution, flooding, declining water availability and deforestation. Awareness of the impacts on businesses and supply chains is increasing, along with a heightened urgency for effective solutions.

To address this and build upon the opportunity to strengthen existing landscape and jurisdictional approaches, the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) worked in partnership with Yayasan Aliansi Wali Sumber Daya Air Indonesia (Water Stewardship Indonesia), Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO),  Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) and Lingkar Temu Kabupaten Lestari (LTKL) to strengthen water stewardship practices within existing commodity standards, and jurisdictional and landscape approaches.

As a result of this project, titled ‘Boosting sustainability practice and performance at the landscape level through good water stewardship’, AWS produced a series of reports to help businesses align with local government efforts, guide standard implementers (AWS, RSPO and GPSNR), and explore ways to promote water stewardship adoption in Indonesia.

This project (July 2020 – June 2022) was supported by the ISEAL Innovations Fund and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
