Alliance for Water Stewardship

Governance

We are committed to a system of balanced multi-stakeholder governance. To this end, our members provide the highest level of governance for AWS. They split their expertise between a Board of Trustees and a Technical Committee. These are interdependent entities but with clear responsibilities.

AWS is registered as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCO45894).

We are governed by our members, who are eligible to participate in our Annual General Meeting and elect representatives to the AWS Board of Trustees and AWS Technical Committee to help steer the development of the AWS System.

AWS Board

The AWS Board is made up of Trustees who have the skills, knowledge and experience to effectively govern and direct the organisation. Separating member interests from day-to-day management of AWS is guided by lessons learned from peer organisations and advice from experts.

The AWS Board of Trustees is responsible for developing and approving the AWS strategy, financial oversight, risk management, developing policies and procedures, appointing and monitoring the CEO and managerial guidance that keeps us aligned with our values and the principles of good governance. Board Members serve three-year terms.

AWS Technical Committee

The Technical Committee is the stakeholder representative unit of AWS governance. Members of the Technical Committee are elected by AWS members to represent a sectoral interest group: civil society organisations, private sector and public sector. The Technical Committee is designed to enable multi-stakeholder consideration and, where applicable, decision-making on matters within the scope of its responsibilities, which include:

  • AWS Standard(s)
  • AWS Standard Guidance
  • AWS Assurance Requirements (requirements for Conformity Assessment Bodies (CAB), certification requirements)

The Technical Committee is also responsible for resolving disputes within the AWS System.

The AWS Technical Committee has up to 12 members with four seats reserved for each sectoral interest group. Members serve for a maximum of three years. We encourage anyone who is interested in joining the AWS Technical Committee to take AWS Standard System Training

The Technical Committee Terms of Reference explains their role and responsibilities in more details. If you are an AWS Member and have a matter for the AWS Technical Committee, please complete our review form.
