Policy engagement

Water stewardship is shaped not only by action on the ground, but also by the policies, standards and governance frameworks that guide those actions. At the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), we believe that meaningful policy engagement is essential to advancing credible water stewardship globally.

AWS works with members and strategic partners to ensure that water stewardship is represented in key policy dialogues and governance processes. Our approach is collaborative, inclusive and grounded in real-world experience.

Strategic global engagements

AWS Members contribute to global conversations on water stewardship through participation in high-profile events and initiatives. These include:

  • Conferences and thematic events on water reuse, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and stewardship policy.
  • Learn from and collaborate with initiatives like the Water for Climate Pavilion, WaterLogues, GIZ NatuReS, SDC and IDRA.

Technical feedback

AWS Members are invited to contribute feedback on regional and global policy initiatives, standards and governance guidelines. AWS also collaborates on research and development efforts to advance credible water stewardship. Some examples of work AWS has contributed to include:

  • Building resilience
  • Collective action
  • Circular water economy innovation
  • Water reuse

Public Sector Training

The public sector is the true backbone for any societal reforms and therefore forms an important part of AWS’s multi-stakeholder membership. AWS is proud to announce the launch of its new AWS water stewardship for public sector training course.

This training course is designed to equip public sector actors with the knowledge and practical tools to advance credible water stewardship in their catchment and jurisdiction.

Tailored to the specific geographical and governance context where the training will be delivered, the course will take public sector actors through a journey to identify opportunities for using water stewardship to unlock collective action to build more resilient catchments and jurisdictions.

Participate in our Policy Dialogue Series

Our Policy Dialogue Series is a member-led platform for exploring key policy, regulatory and governance topics. These dialogues offer:

  • A global platform to share experiences and insights on implementing water-related policies.
  • Opportunities to raise questions and discuss the impacts of policy directives on water stewardship goals.
  • Member-driven topics – recent discussions have included the EU Water Resilience Strategy, the impact of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) on water stewardship, and water reuse.

Join the AWS policy engagement group

Members with a public sector focus can join the Policy Engagement Group, a space for learning and collaboration on global and regional governance initiatives. This group includes:

  • Development partners
  • International NGOs
  • Policy experts and contributors

Together, we explore opportunities to advance water stewardship through policy.
