Alliance for Water Stewardship Priority Sectors

Agricultural supply chains

Agricultural supply chains are complex. They involve a multitude of stakeholders, from investors, brands, retailers and producers to local suppliers, cooperatives and smallholder farmers. At every level of the supply chain, water stewardship creates opportunities for building resilience to water challenges and working collaboratively to overcome them.

Sector water challenges

At first glance, water stewardship may seem overwhelming. For some, the sheer volume of suppliers to engage with and the complexities of commodity trading are key concerns. For others, a challenging local operating context or competing demands from customers can make prioritising action on water more difficult. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to water stewardship in agricultural supply chains.

AWS Community of Practice

In the face of these water challenges, AWS facilitates a Community of Practice (CoP) on Agricultural Supply Chains that includes AWS Members, strategic sector partners and others. We work together to identify barriers and find solutions to the scaled adoption of water stewardship. Our work with the agricultural sector is informed by global value chains and driven by best practice.

AWS Working Groups

The Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) has working groups for each of its priority sectors:

  • Agricultural Supply Chains
  • Food & Beverage Manufacturing
  • ICT & Microelectronics
  • Textiles & Apparel

The working groups are made up of AWS Members and their partners who work with us to identify barriers to water stewardship and find solutions to overcome them.

Join an AWS Working Group

The working groups allow organisations to collaborate with other business leaders, NGOs and regional experts to get a deeper understanding of the water challenges faced by their sector. They are also an opportunity to share experiences of using the AWS Standard and to set the agenda for water stewardship.

Join an AWS working group and you’ll find purpose-driven individuals united in a mission to protect the earth’s freshwater resources.

You don’t need to be an AWS Member or commit to AWS certification to join our Working Groups but, once you’ve joined, we hope you’ll be inspired to sign up.

Priority Sectors

The Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) works with four priority business sectors to deepen their engagement with water stewardship.

Our four priority business sectors are:

The four priority sectors have a big impact on global water resources through their operations and supply chains. They also have significant influence and have been willing to use their leadership to support AWS with its water stewardship goals.

AWS’s strategy is to engage multinational companies and their stakeholders at a global level, and encourage context-driven action by brands, producers, suppliers and other public sector and civil society stakeholders at local levels.

Our work comes to life through collaborative global working groups and national platforms that focus on the opportunities, challenges and solutions to implementing the AWS Standard.

Partnership is key. Together, we raise awareness of sector water challenges and demonstrate the benefits of water stewardship for businesses, their supply chains and the communities in which they operate.
