Alliance for Water Stewardship Priority Sectors

Food & beverage manufacturing

The food and beverage manufacturing sector was one of the first to adopt water stewardship. Some companies recognised early on that AWS Standard enabled them to connect actions taken at an operational level to those taken further down the supply chain. By embedding water stewardship in their internal environmental management approaches, they could roll it out at scale across the business.

AWS works with these businesses to help them tailor internal training and awareness-raising sessions to support this way of working.

Sector water challenges

At first glance, water stewardship may seem overwhelming. For some, the sheer volume of suppliers to engage with and the complexities of commodity trading are key concerns. For others, a challenging local operating context or competing demands from customers can make prioritising action on water more difficult. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to water stewardship in food and beverage manufacturing.

Water use in the processing and production of food and beverages extends beyond agricultural use.

AWS Collective Action Accelerator

Food and beverage manufacturers can continue to lead the way by joining AWS Collective Action Accelerators in the locations where they operate. Find out more about how your company can jumpstart water stewardship action by clicking the button below.

Connections to agriculture

The food and beverage manufacturing sector has strong links to agriculture, with many of its water challenges found within agricultural supply chains. As a result, it faces similar complexities of supply chain management and a multitude of stakeholders at every level. Good water stewardship allows businesses to build resilience to water challenges in the supply chain and to work collaboratively to overcome them.

AWS Community of Practice

AWS facilitates a Community of Practice (CoP) on Agricultural Supply Chains that brings together AWS Members, strategic sector partners and others working in both food and beverage and agriculture. This community meets to share learning and knowledge about water stewardship.
