Alliance for Water Stewardship Priority Sectors

Pharmaceuticals, chemicals & personal care

From over-the-counter and prescription medications to shampoo and body wash, the pharmaceutical, chemical and personal care sector plays a huge role in the global economy. With many companies owning their own manufacturing facilities, this sector is in a strong position to ignite and nurture water stewardship action across their value chains.

Sector water challenges

Many sites in the industry are facing risks related to water quality and flooding. One report found that 78% of pharmaceutical sites are operating in basins with either high or very high water quality risks, and 89% of sites face a medium, high or very high risk of flooding.

More than 75% of production sites in the pharmaceutical sector face water quality and/or flood risks.
