This report is the third in a series by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) that explores the impact of technology company value chains on water resources. Building on previous AWS publications, Water Risk in the ICT Sector: The Case for Action (2021) and Water Strategy in the ICT Sector: Steps to Start your Water Stewardship Journey (2022), the report examines the water-related impacts of data centres and identifies opportunities for water stewardship.

AWS Case Study – Caithness General Hospital

In November 2019, Caithness General Hospital in Wick, which is managed by NHS Highland, became the first hospital and public-sector agency in the world to achieve AWS certification. NHS Highland, which provides health and social care services in an area representing 41 per cent of Scotland’s land mass, has a responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of its activities. This includes tackling water pollution.

The World’s First AWS Group Certification: Ci Técnicas Baltime de Colombia S.A

German food retailer, EDEKA in partnership with the WWF worked with one of their suppliers – Dole Food Company, one of the largest suppliers of fruit and vegetables in the world – to implement the AWS Standard at 11 privately owned banana farms in Colombia, achieving the world’s first AWS Group certification. These large-scale farms are all managed by CI Técnicas Baltime de Colombia S.A and employ hundreds of people. Their experiences can help inform other sites seeking AWS Group Certification.
